I had same problem, took me ages to find this post among all (adding "solved" to the error message in google was a success lol) and now I can confess that The backup lasts around 30 minutes, everything looks fine, the Exchange backup seems complete and ready to be restored if needed (that's nice).But once or twice a month, and recently once very much like a tree, or wait, like a snake... Event Viewer reports "Atapi - Event ID 11 - Driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0". Maybe it's a combination of windows and drivers and hardware sort of timing-out that all just happen to coincide. So first of all go to HD manufacturer site and download utility to check true underlaying health of your hard-drive. They checked everything we did, drivers, diagnostics, etc. we don't get the event 11 ID. Wow the identical machine does not do it eh. Look through logs and see what is starting at the same moment when the error occurs. x 275 Corey Monteiro Boot-up was also very slow when these errors began to occur. Under heavy disk I/O these errors would occur.
Boot-up returned to normal speed and errors went away after disconnecting the card reader. Still, as mentioned earlier - for most folks motherboard is fine and the culprit will be hard-drive that is getting old and about to fail. Simply removing any CF cards when they are not in use fixed this problem. In the meantime, perhaps the application log might have a corresponding entry to the system log event 11 if there is indeed a snapshot taking place? There are many motherboards starting at just $50 and in most cases it will improve overall performance and stability for you, even if you keep the same CPU and other components.
