Is this ruining a disk each time you try to burn? In order to listen to a music CD all what needs to be done is to insert music CD ( Compact Dics ) into CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive and fire up you favorite i dont have a dvd drive but i can play mp3s fine and used to be able to burn data disks as well. If so, don't reinstall it, but add nautilus-cd-burner and ubuntu-desktop to the end of the install command.

In a terminal, groups $USER If you are not, then run this command sudo usermod -aG $USER cdrom You will need to logout for the changes to take affect.
