my problem was with KB975558 and it .cat file in catroot is KB975558.cat. I'll try the download method, and if that doesn't work I'll try the method of making a CD. The process always stops at the same point: during the generation of restoring point. I downloaded and runned the file WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86.exe (300 MB) and, after the system reboot, a prompt window popped up saying "Access Denied" and "Error...

My last resort is trying to uninstall the SP3 using the Recovery Console:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249/enDo you have any other idea? check in task manager and see what memory is available before you run install spk3. Avast Antivirus was obviously turned off.I've tried to restore the system, but had no luck. THE WIN XP SP3 UPGRADE FAILED! followed your directions and worked like a charm, thanks again. Deleted all kb*.cat files in CatRoot subfolders. Also guys, try MS page, they have like 8 solutions and you can click on "Fix it" option on MS page and you will get a file to download and it
